The Flood Stopping Community app, aimed at high-school teachers and students but easily usable by any citizen, is designed to educate and mobilise users to prevent and minimise flood damage, transforming them into active contributors—Flood Stoppers!
Our app has been initially designed within our E+ Flood Stopping Project context, in order to enable the implementation of Flood Stopping Community Mapping activities, which will involve 50+ students and teachers from partner schools in Cyprus and Greece in participatory workshops to map flood-prone areas in their local communities. Through these workshops, participants will collect data and develop bottom-up adaptation plans, which will then be presented in Brussels in December 2024 during the mobility event celebrating the end of the project. The results will be used to raise awareness and inform local decision-makers to improve flood-related climate risk management policies.
But how does the App work?
In this article, we will tell you how the app’s main features empower users to make a significant impact.
Registrations
After they download the app on their mobile devices and answer a short questionnaire to test their knowledge of floods, users are invited to join the Flood Stopping Community by creating an account. Required information includes name, email, country, and user type (student, teacher, or interested citizen). Optional data such as the city can also be provided. These data are stored securely in line with GDPR regulations, ensuring user privacy and data protection. Registration not only allows access to all app features but also helps build a comprehensive community database for better flood resilience.
Engaging Features for Flood Stoppers
Once registered, users access the main menu, featuring several key activities:
- Discover Our Didactic Material: This section is a treasure trove of educational resources. Users can access and download our videos, manuals, and podcasts that provide comprehensive information on flood prevention and management. Additionally, users can test their knowledge with technical questions based on the didactic material. This feature helps users gauge their understanding and resilience profile, which is private to them and the app administrators.
- Meet the Community: Flood Stoppers can connect with others through this feature, fostering a supportive and informed community. Users can view a list of community members and initiate chats either individually or by creating groups. To prevent spam, users receive only one message before deciding whether to continue the conversation. Notifications for chat activities can be activated or deactivated according to user preferences.
- Help Prevent Floods: This interactive map feature is central to the app’s community-driven approach. Users can select a point they know about on a digital map and add important geographic points, such as:
- Drainage points (blocked or not)
- Soil cover types (asphalt, green space, hard-packed soil)
- High safe spots (hilltops, high floors in public buildings)
- Low-lying areas (prone to standing water)
- Water bodies (rivers, ponds, sea)
- Hospitals and health facilities
- Infrastructure crossings (roads, railways intersecting watercourses)
- Schools and kindergartens
- Nursing homes and assisted living facilities
Users mark these points with icons on the map, add relevant pictures, and provide short descriptions (up to 250 characters). In order to be validated, other users must confirm these entries, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
